The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office released records to New Times that seem to contradict our notion that the SCA fishing trip in Alaska may have been funded by the county.

To the office’s credit, the taxpayer-funded trip to Alaska taken by Sheriff’s Office personnel in late October to early November 2006 appears to be a case in which deputies did something about one of the county’s thousands of outstanding warrants.

Not that we can give too much credit. This is a case in which deputies went all the way to Alaska to bring back a car thief — and used the time to spend two days at McClure’s Rustic River Retreat at taxpayer expense. Yeah, that’s good work, if you can get it.

Here’s the receipt that MCSO provided:

Something else to note: Captain Joel Fox wrote on our blog post yesterday that he never did tell JJ Hensley from the Arizona Republic that the SCA Alaska trip was in November 2006:

The fishing trip wasn’t in November of 2006 and I didn’t say it was, either. I don’t know how they came up with that date.

We wrote Fox back both by e-mail and on the blog, asking him when the SCA trip was, if not in November. We also called JJ to ask him about Fox’s denial. We’ll update this post if we hear back from them.
