Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joshua Silverman, a 35-year-old from Scottsdale, was one of six soldiers who died in a helicopter crash this week in Afghanistan, according to the Defense Department.
Silverman is the 49th Arizonan to die in Afghanistan under “Operation Enduring Freedom.”

According to a CNN report, the helicopter likely crashed from mechanical failure, but “two senior U.S. officials” said the soldiers may have survived the crash and been killed by enemy fire.
Fifty-one Arizonans have died in “Operation Enduring Freedom,” with 49 of the deaths in Afghanistan, where Pat Tillman was the first Arizonan killed back in April 2004.
Ninety-eight Arizona soldiers died during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
