Governor Jan Brewer announced yesterday that she and Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne plan to ask the Supreme Court to lift an injunction that has prevented several parts of Senate Bill 1070, Arizona’s controversial immigration law, from taking effect.
Last month, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to reverse a federal judge’s order that prevented certain aspects of the law from taking effect, namely a provision that allowed police investigating other crimes to ask a person about their immigration status if they have reasonable suspicion that the person is in the country illegally.
At this point, we’re all well-versed in arguments both for and against the controversial, new immigration law. Opponents say it could violate the Constitutional rights of citizens, and it’s not a state’s job to enforce immigration laws. Proponents say it’s a necessary step to curb illegal immigration and mirrors federal law. But we want to know what you think: should the Supreme Court overturn the injunction?
