New figures released Tuesday show that under the current budget signed by Governor Brewer last week, the state is now at least $1 billion in the hole.

After eight months of negotiation, who would expect anything less, right?

The figures were part of a report from the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, and show that while the state has dug itself out of its $3.4 billion hole, it will still need to find a way to come up with $1 billion, or start making cuts.

Not knowing how much money state agencies are actually going to have has left several of them in limbo.

Brewer called the Legislature into another fall special session, and told legislators to fix the budget by September 30, or else!

Given the Legislature’s past success at meeting budget deadlines, Brewer might as well have told legislators to fix it by September 30, 2012, and they probably wouldn’t even meet that!
