This might be hard to believe if you’re a Phoenix commuter, but a study says Phoenix has the safest drivers among all the big cities in the United States — for the ninth year in a row.
Phoenix drivers, on average, go nearly a decade between collisions, according to a study by Allstate (go ahead and read the rest of this in the Allstate-guy voice).
Allstate’s definition of “big city” is a population of more than 1 million, so really, Phoenix only beat out eight other cities.
Out of the 200 largest cities in America, Phoenix is 71st. Fort Collins, Colorado takes the top spot overall.

It doesn’t appear that the Phoenix thing is a fluke, though. For cities with a population between 500,000 and 750,000, Tucson has the safest drivers in America, and for cities with a population between 250,000 and 500,000, Mesa has the safest drivers in America.
If you’ve ever been minding your own business on Loop 101 when some jackass from Mesa slams into you and totals your beloved car (AHEM), then you might beg to differ, but this is what Allstate claims.
The report is just based on Allstate’s claims, so maybe it just says something about drivers with Allstate insurance. Or, maybe it’s legitimate. All of the accompanying information can be found here.
