A Phoenix police sergeant was found shot to death in a parking lot near the Arizona State Capitol last night.

The sergeant who was shot has not been identified and police don’t have any suspects at the moment.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers began looking for the sergeant after he failed to respond to radio calls around 10 p.m. yesterday.

Around 11 p.m., Capitol Police spotted what they thought was an abandoned police cruiser in an alley behind the Arizona Department of Transportation parking lot near 17th Avenue and Jefferson Street. Inside, they found the body of the sergeant.

Police have set up a perimeter and are looking for suspects. They are looking to see if there are any surveillance cameras in the area that may have captured the shooting.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon issued the following statement about the shooting:

“My heart and my prayers are with our fallen police sergeant, his family and our police pepartment.

“Rest assured, the City of Phoenix will commit every resource necessary and do everything in our power to find the killer or killers, capture them and bring them to justice,” he said.
