The Phoenix Police Department’s got a brand new who done it on its hands.

Two Phoenix cops patrolling an area near the 3100 block of West Van Buren Street early Sunday morning, about 1:45, saw a woman lying near the sidewalk on the north side of the street.

The two officers stopped to see if the woman was alright and noticed she was “severely injured.”

The unidentified woman, described as being 40-50 years old and possibly transient, was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

That’s all Phoenix police are willing to say, at this point.

Phoenix Sergeant Tommy Thompson says the case is being investigated as a homicide but investigators aren’t releasing the cause of death because they currently have “very little to go on.”

In any event, anyone with any information about a woman who may have been “severely injured” near the 3100 block of West Van Buren Street early Sunday morning is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6141, or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
