Since the moment Governor Jan Brewer’s campaign manager suggested that her opponent in the gubernatorial election, Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, was gay, Goddard has insisted that he’s not (insert standard “not that there’s anything wrong with that” comment here).

During a no-holds-barred exchange between the candidates last night in Tucson, Goddard took it a step further and called on Jan to fire her campaign manager, Chuck Coughlin, for hinting that Goddard might be a little gaybo.

“You got to get rid of Chuck,” Goddard told Jan. “I think Jan Brewer should be ashamed of having her campaign manager, and therefore her campaign, involved in trying to change the subject so blatantly, trying to get off of talking about what matters to Arizona.”

Goddard should cut her some slack — Jan’s campaign hasn’t been completely focused on outing her opponent with claims that he might be gay — we can recall at least one instance where she talked about all the times she “have did what’s right for Arizona.”

In case you missed one of the more entertaining days in Arizona politics in recent memory (Brewer’s epic meltdown during the gubernatorial debate being the most entertaining, of course), we’ll help catch you up.

On Tuesday, former New Times reporter John Dougherty posted something on his Facebook wall saying he’d heard rumors that Brewer was ill and might not be able to complete a four-year term.

Brewer’s campaign responded to the rumor by saying Jan was healthy as an ox with a raspy cigarette voice and that Goddard was gay.

It was a great day for Arizona politics.
