There’s a winner in the race to become the first gun-crazy state to have it’s own official state firearm — and it’s not Arizona.

Earlier this week, Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed a bill designating the Browning model M1911 automatic pistol as the official state firearm, leaving Arizona in the hunt for — at the very best — a silver medal in the race for symbolic expressions of Second Amendment silliness.

Arizona currently has a bill working its way through the state legislature that would make the Colt single-action Army revolver the official state firearm.

More than 40 Arizona state legislators have signed on to the bill, including all the usual suspects of right-wing kookery like Senate President Russell Pearce, and Representative Judy Burgess, who seem hell-bent on making Arizona the laughing stock of the entire country. See the names of rest of the legislators who have signed on to the bill here.
