Raul Castro, Arizona’s first and only Hispanic governor, died last week at the age of 98.
Several years ago, New Times’ Stephen Lemons went down to Nogales to interview the former governor and U.S. diplomat at his home.
The video above is essentially the highlight reel of that interview, as Castro tells some stories from his heyday, including a run-in with Border Patrol agents, his first time meeting Jimmy Carter, and people confusing him with Fidel Castro’s brother.

Lemons’ 2009 story from his interview with Castro includes more stories from Castro’s life, including Castro facing discrimination throughout his life. Even a few years after that story was published, Castro had another well-publicized run-in with Border Patrol agents, who detained him at the age of 96.
