Thousands of emerald-clad kooks have flocked to Padre Murphy’s over the past 17 years for the Glendale pub’s super-sized Saint Patrick’s Day Tent Party. According to owners Tom and Peggy Boyle, however, the most memorable of the bunch wasn’t some drunken yahoo, but a man of the cloth.
Namely, Tom’s childhood pastor (and the joint’s namesake), Father Daniel Murphy.
“He used to come down from Binghamton, New York, every St. Patrick’s Day wearing a green sports jacket,” says Peggy. “Now we send him T-shirts to pass out to his friends.”
Even though Father Murphy won’t be around for this year’s celebration on Thursday, March 17, plenty of others will be in attendance. Roughly 5,000 patrons in search of green-themed good times will jam themselves underneath a 16,000-square-foot setup in the parking lot of the pub.
