Endless Summer

It seems as though the summer arrives earlier and earlier each year, as that unforgiving beeyotch Mother Nature delights at ratcheting up the Valley’s thermostat way before we’re ready to start enduring the sweltering, 100-degree-plus temperatures. So it’s good to know that Joel Davis (a.k.a. DJ Epidemic) is already preparing…

Troth or Dare

Do you remember that scene from the 1998 crapfest . . . er, rom-com The Bachelor in which hundreds of crazed wanna-be brides wearing white gowns dash down a San Francisco street chasing Chris O’Donnell? It’s kind of like what The Brides of March event is gonna be like, except…

St. Pat’s Without the Puke

There are two schools of thought on how to celebrate the annual exercise in alcoholic excess that is Saint Patrick’s Day, which falls this year on Tuesday, March 17: A) Gather with hundreds of drunken, screaming malcontents covered in cheesy green trinkets and listen to clamorous Celtic rock bands while…

The Green Party

There’s a particular word in Irish slang that perfectly sums up the spirit behind St. Patrick’s Day: craic. Pronounced “crack,” it usually signifies that boisterous good times are afoot, thanks to a merry mix of alcohol, music, and maybe even some debauchery. So it goes without saying that the craic…

Miniature Tigers: Almost Everyone Loves Charlie Brand

Like many musicians, Charlie Brand was not a happy high-schooler. Discussing his days as an art school dropout — a troubled kid sent to a Scientology-run youth camp, where he lied to the E-Meter reader to escape, only to become a chronically depressed and morbidly obese pothead — the 24-year-old…

Prep School

Jen Deveroux knows how to put on one hell of a party. Just look at the 30-something scenester’s wildly successful “Adult Swim” shindigs she and indie promoter Psyko Steve presented this past summer at the Hotel San Carlos’ rooftop pool. (The events were so crowded that the Phoenix fire marshal…

Jugheads Returns With New Look, Old Name

Raise a can of PBR in salute, as P-Town punk bar Jugheads is re-opening to the public tonight with a special celebration. As I reported a few weeks ago, former proprietor Tonya Copeland (the widow of original owner Sid Copeland) sold the bar at the end of January to the…

Where to Celebrate Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday in Phat Fashion

Hope you’ve recovered from whooping it up during All-Star Weekend, because yet another partying holiday is upon us: Fat Tuesday (a.k.a. Mardi Gras). For those of the Catholic faith, it means one last 24-hour session of excess before abstaining for the next 40 days during the Lenten period. But even…

Boom Boom Room

Logan Howard (a.k.a. DJ Element) has cooler friends than you’ll ever have. Among his plethora of pals are a slew of artists, rappers, and turntablists, all of whom can transform an ordinary club into a playa’s paradise filled with phat beats and hip-hop treats. And they’re doing just that during…

The Vinyl Frontier

If you’ve been wondering why all the cool obscure vinyl from places like Eastside Records and Tracks in Wax has disappeared lately, chances are these platters have found their way into the collection Djentrification. Don’t worry, they ain’t hoarding all the wacky wax from you charlatans (à la Jack Black…

WWE Officially Announces WrestleMania XXVI in Glendale

World Wrestling Entertainment owner Vince McMahon and a cadre of his superstars rubbed elbows and traded jokes with Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt during a press conference this afternoon announcing next year’s WrestleMania XXVI at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. As we reported yesterday, WrestleMania is considered the Super…

WrestleMania, the Super Bowl of Wrestling, Coming to Glendale; Announcement Expected Tomorrow

We received an e-mail stating that World Wrestling Entertainment will be holding a press conference tomorrow afternoon at the stadium to announce a “major international event” occuring there in spring 2010 that will “draw visitors from around the world for five days of activities.” Although the e-mail doesn’t specifically identify the event (and only names the WWE in the subject line), we’re fairly certain it’s next year’s Wrestlemania 26. After all, the yearly grappling extravaganza and pay-per-view is the only such event that the WWE puts on during the spring. A similar press conference is held every year around this time announcing where WrestleMania is heading next.

Bassface

It’s apparently gonna be a big weekend for drum ‘n’ bass fans. In addition to the launch of the new Influx Friday monthly dance party over at Draw 10, a slew of local turntablists will be bringing the boom to Cajun restaurant Chez Monieux, 5004 South Price Road in Tempe,…

Those Lowdown Blues 25th Anniversary Party

It’s said that “a Sunday well spent brings a week of content,” which is why for the past few years we’ve been spending the last night of our weekends tuned into local NPR station KJZZ (91.5 FM on your radio dial) for Bob Corritore’s program Those Lowdown Blues. Every week…
